Earliest meeting: Thursday 5th June 1755 Final meeting: Thursday 5th June 1755 The Cheshire suburb of Latchford is in the ward of Warrington about a mile from the centre of the town. It lies between the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal and is, in the main, a residential area. That was not the case back in the middle of the 18th century when races took place on Latchford Heath. The Historical List of Races and Matches reported a meeting taking place on Thursday 5th June 1755. In the match the roan horse owned by Mr Dale cleverly defeated Mr Bent’s chestnut horse. Later meetings were held on Latchford Heath, although they were billed as Warrington Races.
